Why
I co-founded FRC 7839 Night Fury in high school, then after graduating we started 9029, and the GitHub organization we had used for 7839 became the new team's. Some of the software work was about fitting the code to the hardware we already had. The 2024 swerve drive is one example. YAGSL runs the steering PID on the motor controller, but our modules steered with low-cost VictorSPX controllers, so I added a VictorSPX angle motor to our fork that runs PID and feedforward on the roboRIO.
What I did
I co-founded the team after high school; our rookie season was 2023. Until 2024 I wrote the vision library and much of the early robot code.
- 2023, vision: the team's Python vision library, with AprilTag pose estimation, retroreflective tape detection and two-camera stereo on a Jetson Nano.
- 2024, swerve: I extended the YAGSL swerve library so that low-cost VictorSPX controllers could steer the modules, and maintained the competition code during both 2024 regionals.
- 2025–26: newer members wrote the robot code. I wrote game-piece vision and tracking, and did an AI-assisted review and bug-fix pass on the 2026 code.
Results
The team won the 2025 Ankara Regional and reached the FIRST Championship in Houston in 2025 and 2026. In Houston in 2025 it won the Gracious Professionalism Award. Over those two seasons it also won the Industrial Design Award twice and the Innovation in Control Award, and was a finalist at two more regionals.
